Agence Frnace Presse reported on Wednesday, February 27th that a petition has been launched to make St. Patrick’s Day a holiday in the U.S. I didn’t realize it wasn’t.  St. Patrick’s day is the feast day of the patron saint of Ireland and Irish American Catholic’s have been celebrating here in the US, along with millions of other beer drinking Americans, since the first major wave of Irish immigrants in the 1800’s.  Even though it’s not an official holiday, most people enjoy a holiday that is celebrated with beer.  The push for signatures is being spearheaded by an Irish Stout Beer company.  Imagine that.  The US Census Bureau says that over 36 million US residents claim Irish ancestry.  And while most people who you find out in the Irish pubs celebrating St. Patrick’s day are not celebrating a religious holiday, what’s wrong with enjoying a beer in honor of the deceased.  The way I figure it, I don’t think we need to make St. Patrick’s day a holiday, it would be smarter to make the next day a holiday to give everyone time to sleep off the hangover.  In a world full of disagreement, disharmony and hatred, any excuse that gets people together to celebrate a religion or a culture different than their own, is a good thing.
