Much Ado About Nothing!
I don’t really understand art anymore. I’ve heard it loosely defined as anything that elicites a reaction or experience. But that seems to negate the extreme mental and spiritual efforts put forth by artists who’ve honed their craft and developed skills that exceed those of mere mortals. In the past, people devoted their lives to their art. What makes art special to me is that I can’t duplicate it. It’s part gift and part discipline. When I look at some of Michelangelo’s sculptures, where he transformed blocks of hard marble into a living breathing bodies, I see beauty. I appreciate the effort, the lifetime commitment to his work. But that type of commitment has no value anymore - or so it seems. The reason we can experience so much with Rembrandt’s rendition of the prodigal son, is because of his painstaking effort to transfer emotion and feeling into color. To capture life on a flat canvas that literally speaks to you. Why the rant? Reviews. Rave reviews of art that I just don’t get. One artist created a large crack in the floor of a hall of The Tate Modern Museum in London. His goal: to illustrate racial and class divides in society. Seriously? Then there’s New York, where an artist created a hole in the ground that is 38 feet by 30 feet by 8 feet deep. His intent: still unclear.Art should inspire. Art should move your soul. Art should take a little effort. My 18 month old makes holes in things. Maybe he’s a prodigy.
