Fired …

A few days ago, the AP reported a story about a lawsuit filed in Maine on behalf of a volunteer firefighter who claimed that she was fired from her job for not showing up to work after helping to put out a fire. Granted, I don’t know all the details but if we except this at face value, this is wrong. Is there no sense of right and wrong anymore? Is there no sense of community. What if that fire was the owners’ home? Would they have felt differently? Today’s small business owners are burdened by an increasing number of expenses, taxes and fees. But firing a volunteer firefighter? Now I’m not saying that the business owner should pay her for time not on duty, but to fire with a reason like that behind her? The city or county as it were, should pay a fair wage to the volunteer firefighter. And there should be some guarantees built in to protect her job. We’ve lost it if we don’t recognize that she’s putting herself at risk to benefit the community. We should be rewarding people who think of helping others, not penalizing them unnecessarily
