The Gang Crisis
Last night’s guest, Detective Jim Simons of the Riverside Police Department brought to light some interesting points. Today’s gangs are bigger, more organized, better financed and more violent than ever before. And while race is a divisive factor, it was interesting to note that we’re seeing an emergence of white supremist gangs coming up against the traditional African American, Hispanic and Asian gangs. Ultimately, family structure is still one of the primary contributing factors to gang activity. And keeping kids out of gangs comes down to knowing their friends and keeping them busy with other activities.
Gang signs and symbols are serious. If your child starts dressing like a gang member, chances are high he’s at least testing the waters with a local gang. Know the signs. Scout the internet for images used by local gangs. And don’t be afraid to confront your child. Kids want to feel like they belong. Make sure that they feel it at home and they’re less likely to look to outside influences.
