Chew on This…

Yes ladies and gentlemen, truth is stranger than fiction. A story reported in Wellington, New Zealand in February of 2005 proved just that.Apparently, a man’s false teeth were found lodged in his throat several days after surgery. According to the article, the 81-year old’s dentures were removed four days post op after he complained of severe pain and had difficulty eating. Citing a neurological condition as the reason for not noting obstruction, doctors claim that his bottom denture plate slipped into his throat during surgery. While it’s true that life sometimes gives you things that are difficult to swallow, the reality is that sometimes - something is in the way!Too many so-called “professionals” advise folks to push past their issues without regard for the cause of the troubles. The problem with this approach is that after the initial enthusiasm wanes, we inevitably slip back into the comfortable way of doing things, the way that avoids the pain. One of the first things I do when working with executives and entrepreneurs is to find out what areas in their life have blockages.Does the company have high turnover? Do customers feel that their needs are met? Does the person have relationship issues? Do they have difficulty accomplishing their tasks on time?Once we identify the pain, we look deeper to see if there is an impediment, real or perceived, that prevents them from moving past their issue. By uncovering the source of their discomfort the person is able to eat up life’s challenges and swallow without feeling as though they have a lump stuck in their throat.Positive thinking works. Attitude is important. But let’s never forget the importance of getting to the heart of a problem. Mary Poppins’ adage that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down may have proved true in the nursery, but successful adults find that sugar only leads to cavities. My advice: Look for the obvious.
