Dreams and Responsibility

Fox News reported that a Yankees rookie signed an autograph: “Red Sox Suck.” In and of itself the comment shows poor sportsmanship. However the worst part isn’t this player’s bad attitude. It’s a total lack of regard for the dreams of another. You see, the person asking for an autograph was a 10 year old Red Sox Fan. Come on folks, is this a joke? This 10 year old boy - who looks up to major league players in general - asks for an autograph and gets a weak attempt at smack talk on his prized baseball? While we obviously don’t know the whole story, I can’t think of any context where this would have been appropriate. The reality is that while most kids eventually lose the autographs, they forever hold onto the memory of when they got the autograph. As children, we link our dreams to our experience of our idols. When you consider that dreams are what propel us to reach beyond what our practical mind thinks is possible, we all stand to benefit from nurturing the dreams of another.

As a society we have to be careful not to shatter kids’ dreams, lest we all pay the price.
