Change
Patrick Adams and our spirited callers made for a fascinating, emotion-packed show. While education is a topic worthy of our passion, we must be careful that our passion doesn’t cloud the facts and disrupt the solution process. Real results and in this case, real change, can only come to be when we set emotion aside and take action at the micro and macro level.
On the micro level, it was obvious that we all agree that everything starts at home. Principals and teachers will tell you that the things they have to face in the classroom were unheard of 10 years ago. The family sets the tone for the value placed on education, and establishes boundaries for discipline, respect and other elements that support a productive classroom environment. And today’s families need to examine the message they are sending to their children.
On the macro level, everyone can agree that more needs to be done through the public education system. Ideas like accountability, standardized tests for students and teachers, holding administrators accountable and incentive-based pay were discussed. And while we didn’t “solve” this complex, multi-layered problem, it is through dialogs such as this that the seeds of change are sown.
Change is hard in big institutions. But without drastic change we are doomed to repeat the same results. It’s time for America to stop the finger-pointing and reclaim its position as a leader.
Ultimately we are all culpable. Mea culpa, tua culpa. Now let’s roll up are sleeves and make a change for the better!
